Before the Ground Freezes
Three of our September blog posts were about getting ready for the freeze. The short version:
Grading and drainage
No fill goes on frozen ground, and every layer gets compacted before it freezes. Low spots and drainage fixes belong on the schedule before the freeze. Read the post
Patios and walkways
When a paver patio heaves or settles, the fix is to lift the pavers, repair the base underneath and reset them. For ice this winter, plain rock salt is the least damaging deicer for concrete pavers; skip magnesium chloride, which can break down concrete. Read the post
Septic and water lines
Snow works as insulation over a septic tank and field, so a thin snow year lets frost reach deeper. A tank left full for months with no warm water coming in, like at a house that sits empty all winter, can freeze, so have it pumped before you close up. If a system does freeze, call a professional first, and do not pour in antifreeze, salt or additives. Read the post
